  5. The plus signs are aligned by 
  6. rotating the body of the 
  7. instrument by grasping it by 
  8. the large ribbed ring in front 
  9. of the eyepiece  and rotating 
  10. it.  Rotate the instrument back 
  11. and forth until the horizontal 
  12. lines of the plus signs are 
  13. aligned.

  15. If there is no astigmatism 
  16. the lines will always be 
  17. aligned.  In this case make 
  18. the measurement with the 
  19. axes set at 180 and 90.
